This is a set of some title treatments—alongside an illustration—I did for the
Singapore National Youth Orchestra (SNYO) for their “Sibelius, Rautavaara, and Stravinsky”
concert in December 2024. The client wanted a modern vector-style illustration of a Scandinavian
landscape, representing Jean Sibelius’s Finnish background.
Sibelius ignited the Finnish spirit of independence with his powerful Finlandia, opening the path
for succeeding generations of musicians to promote Finnish music. One of them, Einojuhani Rautavaara,
created his otherworldly concerto for birds and orchestra, Cantus Arcticus, by combining nature
and orchestra through technology.

My first idea for this project was to depict the mountainscape of Scandinavia, with a blue, clean sky in the background. This illustration highlights the natural beauty the region has to offer. Waving strokes surround the objects to give the idea of the “singing and breathing” of nature.
While leaving some space for the title to be added, the second and approved version of the illustration suggests a different focal point of the Scandinavian landscape, showcasing the magical northern lights as requested by the client.
